The 180 Degree Rule: This is a guideline that controls the on-screen spatial relationship between two characters or between a character or an object. An imaginary line called an axis is placed through the character and the object/or other character
Eyeline Match: This is a principle which rules that the audience will want to see whatever the audience is seeing. A cut is made between two shots to give the illusion that the character in the first shot is looking at another character or object in the second shot.
Match On Action: This is when the editor cuts from one shot showing an action to a second shot that fluidly matches the first shot's action. For example: A shot from behind a character going through a door cuts to a frontal shot of them coming out the other side of the door.
Rhythmic Match: This is when scenes are edited with music to match to the rhythm of the music. For example: a shot of a piece of fruit with music playing over the scene changes to another shot of the fruit, now rotten, when the beat of the song happens.
Graphic Match: This is when a graphic on a shot matches the next shot in a way that connotes meaning. For example: When the ape throws the bone in the air as a weapon, it cuts to the space station, a similar, long shape to the bone, which signifies the progress man has made as a species.
