The Maker Research

Most of my research is secondary as it is somewhat difficult to find foley artists that are able to talk about their work at short notice, this is why I watched videos like these in classes and my own time to figure out how foley is done on a professional level. From this I can tell that the foley I do will not be as advanced since I don't have such extensive props and sound equipment. Still, this gives me a good idea of what I can do in my own work with the resources that I have

This video also gives some good examples of how foley is used in animation and how important it is to make sure the sound effects match to the video and that they flow well. I went to free SFX sites and browsed through it listening to all of the non verbal sound effects and thinking about what props were used to make them such as salt or sand being used to create a rushing sound. It also occurred to me that I can layer these sounds together to create a more true to life sound.

The Pearce Sisters is a good example of foley. The animation is set on a windy island that requires a constant rushing sound to match the sounds of the wind and the ocean. At the beginning of the movie, a fly is let out between one of the sisters hands. This was probably taken from a sound effects site, but as for its making, was probably made by simply recording a fly. There is a scene where a fish is killed with a hammer. The sound is almost similar to chopping wood as there is an audible sound of something breaking. This could be what it was, but it sounds more like the chopping of a hard vegetable such as a cucumber or a carrot. Later on, there is a scene where they chop the fish's head off and slide it in to the bucket. I suspect they used the same chopping of vegetables to emulate this sound, and then scraped a knife along a chopping board for the sliding motion.
