Advertisement Evaluation

Our task was to create an advertisement with an assigned subject matter. Our subject was E-Cigarettes, which we use to advertise for instead of against. Filming was done by Livia Borgya-Day and Deborah Adams. I edited and played a hand in directing. The first problem we ran in to was filming. We weren't using a tripod which caused a lot of our shots to be shaky and out of focus. Next time I will make sure we use a tripod at all points in filming as it would've made the final product look much more professional.
Our next problem was excessive amounts of footage. There was a lot of footage, some of it vital to the plot of the advertisement, but there was a limited time frame (15 seconds) which resulted in me having to cut out a lot of the footage I found to be key to the story. If I were to do this over I would make sure I had a clear plan in order for how long every action shot was going to be so that I knew I could fit it in to 15 seconds and still have a clear, comprehensive story.

This is the work I was doing in Premiere Pro. There is a lot of extra footage in the import gallery that I couldn't use since the camera was either too shaky or the actors weren't following the script or laughing.

This is the work I did in After Effects. I did most of the colour correction here to emphasise the contrast between smokers and E-cigarette smokers. I also inserted text at the end to show the company name and slogan.
If I could do this again I would firstly make sure that the footage we got was always relevant and always high quality. I would make sure a tripod was used in all of the shots and that we deleted the footage that wasn't useful before importing it. I would also make sure the actors were always on task when we needed them and not distracted by anything. I would have my plan and storyboard in place and matched up with each relevant shot in order to know the basic order the footage should be in. If I had had more time and better knowledge of After Effects, I would have split the colour on the screen between the two actors, with the colourful side being the one the E-Cigarette user is on, and the muted side being the smoker. I also would've had a voiceover to say the brand name and its slogan.
I am pleased with how the advert turned out in terms of the editing near the end. I used a freeze frame on the remaining smoker and used the blurry footage to my advantage to create a backdrop for the fade-in logo and slogan.
