Public service broadcasting – Providing a service to the general public

Who regulates it – Various regulatory companies such as OFCOM

What do they do – Make sure broadcasted media is up to good standard

State owned broadcasters – State owned broadcasters are broadcasters that are owned and funded by the country/by their government through TV licenses. E.g the BBC

Commercial broadcasters – Independent broadcasters that fund themselves through their own profits through advertisement revenue. E.g ITV

Private companies – Broadcasting service that is independent but must be paid for in order to view. Funded by subscriptions to the company. E.g Sky/Bskyb or Netflix

OFCOM – What impact does it have?

They maintain:

  • Range and balance

  • Quality

  • Diversity

  • Social values

Requirements of PSB

Servicing audiences

Dichotomy between universal appeal and minority interests

Delivery of public service remits

Quality programming, innovation, and experimentation, regional programming, children’s programming, news and current affairs, digital media access to public service content.
